Webster’s dictionary defines laziness as being disinclined to activity or exertion: not energetic or vigorus.
“Disinclined to activity” something about that just makes me angry. I mean think about it. Life; the ups, the downs, the good, bad, and everything in between is a gift. So what I don’t understand is how a person can seriously be disinclined to activity. How does someone choose to just sit around and watch life go by because getting up and doing something might be too hard?
Proverbs 10:4 says Lazy hands make a man poor but diligent hands bring wealth
Proverbs 12:24 say Diligent hands will rule but laziness ends in slave labor
Poor and slave. Those are some strong words. When I got to thinking about my own life I was really able to see how those terms were so true. When I was being lazy, sitting around my house in my pj’s until 2 in the afternoon I had a POOR attitude, my kids had POOR attitudes and the quality of the time I was spending with those around me was very very POOR.
Then I realized that my laziness had made me a slave. A slave to my home that was so disgusting I couldn’t think of inviting friends over. A slave to the time I had to spend putting everything back in order, when I finally decided to do something. I wasn’t able to give my kids all of me because there was too much work to be done.
There is hope though. Just as laziness has its results so does the opposite. Those same verses in Proverbs say that diligence will bring wealth and allow you to rule.
So many times I could have had better options. More time, a better attitude, and happy healthy relationships with my children. If only I were more diligent I could be in control of my time and find wealth in the activities I do with my family.
Today my prayer is that when I start to find myself falling back into my lazy patterns God will remind me that He has more in store for me if I would only be diligent.
Where do you need to be more diligent? Ask God to help you see and correct the lazy patterns in your life.
