Mars Hall Legacy Academy Weekly Round Up Week 4

This week was…well…it was interesting. Part of the joy of being a homeschool family is that when things pop up we are able to toss the scheduled lesson plan and fold in some other types of learning. And that is exactly what we did this week.

A little bit of back story is that this week her in Otero County New Mexico it is county fair week. That means there have been all sorts of activities taking place. One thing that is fun about fair season is being able to share the arts and sciences that have taken place throughout the year. It really is a great opportunity to see all the wonderful talent that is out there.

Last year I made the decision to enter some of my jewelry and I came away with a couple of ribbons. This year I wasn’t sure if I was going to have anything to enter but I dug into my box of ticks and found a few items I could enter. As I was doing so the girls came to me with the desire to enter works of their own. Unfortunately, with the requirements they didn’t have any of the home arts ready to go. However, as I was looking at the rules, categories, and divisions I realized they could still enter some items if they entered into the baked goods competition. So that is just what they did.

On Tuesday rather than complete our regularly scheduled curriculum we spent the whole day in the kitchen as each of the girls baked a different thing to enter into the fair.

Madilynn decided to enter sugar cookies that she decorated with royal icing and then colored on with food grade eatable markers. RaeLynn decided she wanted to bake blueberry lemon cupcakes with lemon buttercream frosting. And Frejya made salted chocolate chip cookies. Everything was just delicious.

Each of the girls had to do the majority of the work by themselves. They followed their recipes precisely and really all I did was stand back and help make sure they didn’t have any questions. **I did help Madilynn with the oven because she is 5**

On Wednesday they went with me to enter the items, we rushed through most of our school assignments, and then spent the afternoon at the playground and the library.

Thursday we were scheduled to spend the day helping dad out at the information booth we have set up for the Mountain Valley Baptist Association and of course we had to go see the results of our entries. So school was again set aside for some community engagement. We will get back to the regularly scheduled program on Monday.

So I’m sure you are wondering how the girls entries did. Well let me show you!

Madilynn’s Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing First Premium
RaeLynn’s Lemon Blueberry Cupcakes with Lemon Buttercream Icing

So overall, we did not do much that many would consider “school” but we did do a lot of learning in the real world and that is what really matters. Come back next week and see how well we are able to catch up!
